Backpack Options

Every backpack is custom built right when you order it, you choose exactly the options you need. Some people don't add anything at all, some add almost everything. Almost every pack I build is different. The more popular options are marked.

If there is some feature you want that you don't see here feel free to ask!

Returns or exchanges are always accepted, even on custom packs.

Webbing Belt
A simple nylon webbing belt, available in 1" or 1.5" widths, and various lengths. A belt adds stability, transfers weight off your shoulders, and allows you to hang the pack away from your back when its hot by loosening the shoulder straps.

I can make this belt detachable but it adds about .3 oz.

Weight: 1.2 to 2 oz depending on length.    Price: $8

Padded Belt    popular
This belt has 2/8" thick padding that wraps around your hips more comfortably than a plain webbing belt. The belt is attached at the center of the pack for a secure fit.

The standard size fits waists 30" to 40". For smaller belts, such as for a child, contact me.

Available in in 1.5 oz/sqyd Cuben Fiber, black 2.4 oz/sqyd Nylon, or 4.2 oz/sqyd Dyneema X Gridstop.

Available in in 1.5 oz/sqyd Cuben Fiber, black 2.4 oz/sqyd Nylon, or 4.2 oz/sqyd Dyneema X Gridstop.

Shoulder Padding
The smaller backpacks (Zero, Zilch, Blast 20) have a bit thinner shoulder padding to save weight. If you would like to size up you may do so here.

Zero, Zilch, Blast 20  - 2/8" is standard
All larger packs - 3/8" is standard.

Weight: +.1 oz    Price: $0

Torso Height
The default height will fit an average person with a torso length around 19" to 21". The actual measurement on the pack is about 21" from the bottom of the belt to the top of the shoulder strap attachment. Feel free to specify a different height.

Weight: 0 oz (tall adds about .1 oz in longer webbing)    Price: $0

Joe Says: The default height is sized to fit me. I'm 5'9. The straps are attached slightly above my shoulders which I find helps take weight off of them.
Height:
Sternum Strap    popular
A sternum strap using 1/2" nylon webbing and a side release clip is added to your shoulder straps at chest level. The strap is removable if not needed.

Weight: .3 oz  /  8.5 grams    Price: $7

Daisy Chain    popular
1/2" width grosgrain webbing is added to the length of each shoulder strap. This creates loops for clipping items like a compass or watch to the straps, or for securing a platypus tube.

Weight: .2 oz  /  6 grams    Price: $8

Hydration Port
If you prefer to carry a Platypus style water bottle on the inside of your pack a covered, reinforced hole can be added to the side of the pack to string out the drinking tube. You can leave the bottle loose on top of your gear, or add a water sleeve below.

Weight: .03 oz  /  1 gram    Price: $4
Location:

Water Sleeve
An internal pocket is added to the backpack to hold a water bladder against your back. Fits a 2 or 3 liter Platypus or other similarly sized bladders. This is usually combined with the hydration port above.

Pictured is a Blast 20 backpack turned inside out with a 3 liter platypus.

Weight: .3 oz  / 8.5 grams    Price: $12
Top Strap    popular
A strap is added to the top of your pack for lashing on a stuff sack, snow crampons, a sleeping pad, or other items. The strap is detachable when you don't need it.

Weight: .25 oz  /  7 grams    Price: $6

Joe Says: I found this option especially handy for lashing a stuff sack of clothing or rain gear to the top of my pack on long stretches when the main pack body was full to the top with food.
Base Shock Cord Loops
Two adjustable shock cord loops are added near the base of your pack. These can be used to secure a sleeping pad, or other long item to the outside of the backpack. The shock cord can be detached when not needed.

Weight: .35 oz  /  10 grams   Price: $7

Joe Says: I like the "top strap" option better for lashing gear, but you could always use both if you need more space.
Shock Cord Lashing    popular
3/32" Shock cord is criss-crossed along the front of the backpack. It can be used to compress the pack, or to strap on items. The shock cord can be detached when not needed.

Weight: .5 oz  /  14 grams    Price: $9

Joe Says: In my experience the extra compression isn't necessary, but this is useful for securing items like wet clothing etc.
Haul Loop
A simple hand loop is added above the shoulder straps for lifting the pack. If you choose not to add this just grab a hold of the top of the pack to lift it.

Weight: .03 oz  /  1 gram   Price: $2

Ice Axe Loops
You have the option of a single loop towards the center-base of the pack, or two loops for a pair of ice axes near the corners. These are usually combined with the Shock Cord Lashing option to secure the axe handle(s) at the top of the pack.

Weight: .1 oz  /  3 grams    Price: $4

# Loops
Additional attachment loops
I can add additional small reinforced loops anywhere on the pack. These can be used for threading shock cord, or for clipping small items. You can either email me or add a note below to specify where you want them.

Weight: .02 oz  /  .6 grams   Price: $1 each

Sleeping Pad Sleeves
You can create a frame by coiling a thin foam pad around the inside of your pack and packing your gear into the center. These sleeves are an alternative option to store your pad on the outside and free up real estate. They also allow you to remove your pad to sit on during breaks.

The default sleeves are roughly 11" wide x 20" tall x 2" deep. If your pad requires different dimensions just ask, no extra charge. The sleeves have elastic to keep them tight.

The following pads are a good fit:
Gossamer Gear Nightlight Torso Pad - 3/4" x 19" x 29" - 3.6 oz
Suluk46 Torso Pad - 1/2" x 19" x 33" - 2.7 oz (shown)
Gossamer Gear (or Suluk46) 3/8" x 19.5 x 44"
Gossamer Gear 1/4" x 20 x 44"  (longer will also fit)

I can also do the same sleeves on the inside of your pack to hold a folding pad in place for the same price.

Weight: .5 oz  /  14 grams    Price: $22

Carbon Fiber Stays
These 20" carbon rods velcro into sleeves at the corners of the pack against your back. This keeps the pack rigid and helps transfer weight off your shoulders and onto your hips. These are especially useful if you are not using a foam pad as a frame, or for carrying heavier loads in a Dyneema pack.

These can be either inside or outside the pack. Outside (as shown) makes them a little easier to put in and take out for other uses.

Weight: about 1.5 oz / 42.5 grams   Price: $20

Mesh Pockets
Mesh is convenient for viewing the items in your pockets and is useful for drying wet gear, however they do add some weight to the pack. By default the pockets are made in the same material as your backpack. (Mesh would actually subtract weight on a Dyneema pack).

This durable polyester mesh weighs 3.0 oz / sqyd, has holes smaller than 1/4", and is dark gray colored.

Weight: +.4 oz / 11.4 grams   Price: $0

Pockets:
Tall Side Pockets
The regular side pockets are sized to fit 1 or 1.5 liter bottles, and are positioned low on the pack to make them easy to reach into without removing the pack.

Tall side pockets will fit a 2 or 3 liter platypus, or other items like a tent, but you may have to remove the pack to get your items out. Don't put all your weight on one side.

Weight: +.1 oz / 3 grams per side   Price: $2 per side

Top Side Pockets
Add a second set of pockets above the standard side pockets. These can be in the regular material (cuben or sil-nylon), or in slightly heavier 3 oz/sqyd mesh as shown.

The dimensions are roughly 6" wide x 3" deep x 8" tall and are a good fit for a cooking pot or other items.

Weight: .16 oz / 4.5 grams per pocket   Price: $10 per pocket
