Webbing Belt
A simple nylon webbing belt, available in 1" or 1.5" widths,

your shoulders, and allows you to hang the pack away from your back
when its hot by loosening the shoulder straps.
I can make this belt detachable but it adds about .3 oz.
Weight: 1.2 to 2 oz depending on length. Price:
$8

a stuff sack, snow crampons, a sleeping pad, or other items. The strap
is detachable
when you don't need it.
Weight: .25 oz / 7 grams Price:

Joe Says: I found this option especially handy for lashing a stuff
sack of clothing or rain gear to the top of my pack on long stretches
when the main pack body was full to the top with food. |

Base Shock Cord Loops
Two adjustable shock cord loops are added near the base of your pack.
These can be used to secure a sleeping pad, or other long item to the
outside of the backpack. The shock cord can be detached when not needed.

Joe Says: I like the "top strap" option better for lashing gear,
but you could always use both if you need more space. |

Shock cord is criss-crossed along the front of the backpack. It can be
used to compress the pack, or to strap on items. The shock cord can be
detached when not needed.

Joe Says: In my experience the extra compression isn't necessary,
but this is useful for securing items like wet clothing etc. |

pack. If you choose not to
add this just grab a hold of the top of the pack to lift it.

Sleeping Pad Sleeves
You can create a frame by coiling a thin foam pad around the inside of
your pack and packing your gear into the center. These sleeves are an
alternative option to store your pad on the outside and free up real
estate. They also allow you to remove your pad to sit on during
breaks.
The default sleeves are roughly 11" wide x 20" tall x 2"
deep. If your pad requires different dimensions just ask, no
extra charge. The sleeves have elastic to keep them tight.
The following pads are a good fit:
Gossamer Gear Nightlight Torso Pad - 3/4" x 19" x 29" - 3.6 oz
Suluk46 Torso Pad - 1/2" x 19" x 33" - 2.7 oz
(shown)
Gossamer Gear (or
Suluk46) 3/8" x 19.5 x 44"
Gossamer Gear 1/4" x 20 x 44" (longer will also fit)
I can also do the same sleeves on the inside of your pack to hold a folding pad
in place for the same price.
Weight: .5 oz / 14 grams Price:
$22

Carbon Fiber Stays
These 20" carbon rods velcro into sleeves at the corners of the
pack against your back. This keeps the pack rigid and helps transfer
weight off your shoulders and onto your hips. These are especially
useful if you are not using a foam pad as a frame, or for carrying
heavier loads in a Dyneema pack.
These can be either inside or outside the pack. Outside (as shown)
makes them a little easier to put in and take out for other uses.
Weight: about 1.5 oz / 42.5 grams
Price: $20

Mesh Pockets
Mesh is convenient for viewing the items in your pockets and is useful
for drying wet gear, however they do add some weight to the pack. By
default the pockets are made in the same material as your backpack.
(Mesh would actually subtract weight on a Dyneema pack).
This durable polyester mesh weighs 3.0 oz / sqyd, has holes smaller
than 1/4", and is dark gray colored.
Weight: +.4 oz / 11.4 grams
Price: $0

Tall Side Pockets
The regular side pockets are sized to fit 1 or 1.5 liter bottles, and
are positioned low on the pack to make them easy to reach into without
removing the pack.
Tall side pockets will fit a 2 or 3 liter platypus,
or other items like a tent, but you may have to remove the pack to get
your items out. Don't put all your weight on one side.
Weight: +.1 oz / 3 grams per side
Price: $2 per side
|
|
 |
Top Side Pockets
Add a second set of pockets above the standard side pockets. These can
be in the regular material (cuben or sil-nylon), or in slightly
heavier 3 oz/sqyd mesh as shown.
The dimensions are roughly 6" wide x 3" deep x 8" tall and are a good
fit for a cooking pot or other items.
Weight: .16 oz / 4.5 grams per pocket
Price: $10 per pocket
